Song SUN

Keynote  Speaker

Song SUN, Ph.D., born in December 1959, former Director of the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (2006.10-2017.3), Dean of College of Ocean,University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prof. Sun has been engaged in marine ecology and biological oceanography research and participated three times of the Antarctic scientific investigation. He has undertaken a number of scientific research projects such as the National Fund Project, the Ministry of Science and Technology 973 Project and the Knowledge Innovation Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was assigned as the chief scientist of the National 973 Project “Key Process, Mechanism and Eco-Environmental Effects of the Outbreaks of China’s Offshore Jellyfish”, the PI of “Tropical western Pacific mass energy exchange and its impact”, “the mechanism of zooplankton functional group change in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea”, etc.
He published more than 200 papers and 6 monographs. Has won the National Ocean Engineering Technology Award (ranked No.1), the Chinese Academy of outstanding scientific and technological achievements Award (ranked No.1), the National Ocean Science and Technology Achievement Award (ranked No.1). He serves the chair and member of the Scientific Steering Committee at the Census of Marine Life (CoML), and the member of Census of Marine Zooplankton (CMarZ). He is the Full Member of Dynamic Process of the Marine Ecosystem at the Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics (GLOBEC), the Special Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR); and Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). Prof. Sun is Chairman of the SCOR-China; Chairman of the Chinese Society for Oceanography; vice chairman of the Chinese Society of Fisheries.

Michael W. BECK

Dr. Michael W. Beck is the lead marine scientist for the Nature Conservancy (TNC) and an adjunct professor in Ocean Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he is based. Mike works on coastal marine conservation in 5 continents across science, business and policy to bring clear tools and results to decision-makers. Mike focuses on building coastal resilience in the interface between adaptation and conservation, where he works to reduce risks to people, property and nature. Also, he has published numerous popular articles including Op-eds in the Miami Herald, NY Times, Huffington Post and Caribbean Journal.

Stephen CAMPBELL

Stephen CAMPBELL is the campaigns leader for the environment program of Oak Foundation and works in the philanthropic portfolio on marine and climate change issues.He has worked for several international environmental organizations in senior management positions including the Antarctic Ocean Alliance, Greenpeace Australia-Pacific and Greenpeace International. Steve is on the board of 350.org/Australia, was formerly on the general assembly of Greenpeace China, and holds an honors degree in Law from Macquarie University, Sydney and a qualification in Legal Practice from the Australian National University, Canberra.

J.Charles. FOX

J. Charles FOX coordinates Oceans 5 on behalf of its Partners and Members. Prior to joining Oceans 5, he served in senior positions with federal and state governments, as well as nonprofit and philanthropic organizations.He served as the Assistant Administrator for Water at the US Environmental Protection Agency and as the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Fox also directed the international ocean conservation programs for the Pew Charitable Trusts and served with several conservation organizations including American Rivers, Friends of the Earth and the Environmental Policy Institute. Fox is viewed as a thoughtful, results-oriented manager with 30 years of experience in the field.

Guangsheng GAI

As the vice president and secretary-general of the Pacific Society of China, Mr. Guangsheng GAI, the former director of Publicity and Education Center of State Oceanic Administration, graduated from Ocean University of China. He served as president of Ocean Publishing House, China Ocean newspaper's editor in chief. He edited and published nearly 100 books on marine and relevant topics, published nearly 100 papers and articles. He is also a submarine photographer, advocating the combination of art and technology for better oceans.

Han HAN

Founder and Executive Director of the China Blue Sustainability Institute, Ms. Han Han has rich experience in working with Chinese seafood industry, fishery authorities and research institutes. She founded China Blue in early 2015, the first Chinese NGO committed in promoting sustainable fishery and aquaculture through multi-stakeholder engagement and improvement. Han has led her team to build China’s first seafood sustainability database, iFISH, and jointly founded the China Ocean NGO Forum. China Blue had successfully hosted the 1st Forum in Haikou. Ms. Han has an M.S. in Environmental Sciences from Rutgers University, and B.S. in Environmental Sciences from Nanjing University.

Boze HANCOCK

Dr. Boze Hancock is the Marine Restoration Scientist for TNC Global Oceans Team, based at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography. Boze has over 30 years of experience in marine research, working on the ecology, fisheries, management and restoration of coastal marine resources and habitats. Since 2004 Boze has been involved in marine and riverine habitat restoration in the US, territories and globally. Habitats include coral reef, salt marsh, seagrass, sponge, mangrove and riparian and estuarine habitats for migratory fish, but with a particular emphasis on shellfish restoration. Also, Boze provides technical support to project managers and teams within TNC and partner organizations.

Hui HUANG

Ms. Hui HUANG is the professor of South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, CAS. She leads the National Key Laboratory of Tropical Marine Biology of CAS. She is also a menber of Asian Coral Reef Society. Prof. HUANG focus on the research on impacts of global climate change and environmental pressure on coral reef ecosystem and its response in China. She found that coral reefs in China faced with more environmental pressures caused by human activities than those from global climate change. She has been committed to promoting multi-channel management of coral and other marine bio-resources.

Keith KEI

Keith KEI is the Executive Director of Hong Kong Reef Check Foundation and a citizen scientist of long-term coral reef monitoring and training. After recieving M.S. in marie Biology from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), he founded the Reef Check Foundation in 1997 at HKUST with Prof. Gregor Hodgson, which mainly promotes marine conservation and coral reef monitoring. Over 800 volunteers from various sectors have engaged in this foundation, and they have monitored 33 sites for reef check in Hong Kong for more than 20 years.

Xinyan LIN

Ms. Xinyan LIN is the Executive of Retz Philanthropic Advisory Services, an independent consultancy firm dedicated to Chinese environmental philanthropy. Before, she worked for Oak Foundation, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, United Nations University Institute for Advanced Study of Sustainability in Switzerland and Japan. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree with honors in Business Administration from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, and a Master’s Degree in International Affairs from Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies.

Sheng LIU

Dr. Sheng LIU is a professor at the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, CAS. He focuses on the structure and function of marine ecosystem, especially the food web structure of tropical coral reef ecosystem. His research also studies the impact of human activities and climate change on the coastal ecosystem and their ecological goods. For example, his team developed an effective detection method of red tide and their pathway through food web in order to evaluate the effects of red tides and other ecological disasters.

Yadan LIU

Yadan LIU is a seniro adivosor and reseacher at China Society of Fisheries. Prior to serving China Society of Fisheries, she has worked at the National Fishery Bureau, Ministry of Agriculture, from 1990 to 1998. In 2013, The China Association for Science and Technology invited Ms. LIU to serve the international chief expert of science popularisation. She focuses on the public education of aquaculture science, as well as the cooperation and exchange between China and international fishery counterparts. Also, she has been actively involved in the collection, analysis, and publicity of international fishery information. Ms. LIU organized a series of international forums, and collaborated with more than 20 natianl governments and NGOs.

Yonglong LIU

Yonglong LIU is the founder and director of Shanghai Rendu Ocean NPO Development Center, he is one of the founders of China Ocean NGO Forum, and the chairman of the Committee for 2nd Forum. Yonglong spent 11 years in state-owned enterprises, intensively involved in stock-holding system reform and operation. Since June 2000, Mr. Liu has started his journey in philanthropy. He had launched the Grassroots Community in Shanghai and Shanghai Rendu Ocean NPO Development Center. He helped incubate several environmental NGOs and served their board.

Sze Ping LU

Sze Ping LU is an environmentalist in China with almost 20 years working experience directing both international and local NGOs. He has taken leadership and governance roles in Greenpeace China, Friends of Nature, Society of Entrepreneurs and Ecology (SEE), China Youth Climate Action Network (CYCAN), Global Call for Climate Action (GCCA) and has founded two NGOs Forward Works and Greenovation Hub. He has also served advisory roles for 350.org, UNEP, Sustainable Development Council of the Hong Kong Government, and the World Economic Forum.

Laurence John MCCOOK

Dr. Laurence McCook had the honour of being awarded a Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation in 2005 and he keeps working on the conservation and management of marine resources. He was employed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, and participated in developing a series of policy on marine protected areas and marine resources management based on scientific research. During the visiting research in South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, CAS, he investigated the main coral reef protected areas in South China Sea and provided constructive suggestions.

May MEI

May MEI is the Executive Director of GoalBlue Low Carbon Development Center. Previously leading WildAid China as the Chief Representative for 11 years, May has extensive knowledge and experience managing and operating an international NGO. Prior to WildAid, May worked for over a decade at CCTV and Hunan TV as director and producer of top programming. In August 2016, May established a China-based organization, “GoalBlue,” with a focus on sustainable lifestyles and environmental protection – “Smart Eating”, “Clean Commuting” and “Blue Ocean”, aiming to promote responsible consumption among young Chinese, which eventually leads to sustainable, healthy and joyful urban life.

Xiaohua QIAN

Xiaohua QIAN is the President of Society of Entrepreneurs & Ecology (SEE). Before becoming an entrepreneur, Mr. Qian used to be a policy analyst in Ministry of Aerospace Industry, and engaged in the structure reform project of China’s Defense System. Currently, Mr. Qian devotes himself wholeheartedly to philanthropy. As a lifetime member of SEE, he has been in the association for more than a decade, and was elected the General Supervisor in 2013 and President in 2015 respectively. Mr. Qian is also fond of supporting history studies. He funded the research on China's International relations, historical archive arrangement and document translation.

Weimin QUAN

Dr. Weimin QUAN mainly engages in estuarine ecology, wetland ecology and marine environmental science. He has directed a number of projects, including the Basal Research Fund of Central-level National Non-profit Research, and the Open Fund of Key Experienment of the Ministry of Agriculture. Also, Dr.Quan plays a critical role in a series of pojects that entusted by Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences, Shanghai Chongmingdongtan National Nature Reserve, and Shanghai Jiuduansha Wetland National Nature Reserveand.

Walter REID

Dr. Walt·REID joined the David and Lucile Packard Foundation in 2006 and is the director of the Conservation and Science Program. Prior to joining the Foundation, he was a professor with the Institute for the Environment at Stanford University from 2005 to 2006. Walt was responsible for the creation of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, which he directed from 1998 until the release of the findings in March 2005. From 1992 to 1998, he was vice president of the World Resources Institute in Washington. Walt earned his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Washington in 1987 and his B.A. in zoology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1978.

Chunbo SHI

Mr. Shi has been working in media industry for 12 years and is now an senior reporter at Qianjiang Evening Newspaper. Starting from 2013, he has published a series of special reports on the status quo and protection of fishery resources in East China Sea.His investigative serial reports of 40 pieces such as “No fish left in the East China Sea”, “Protect juveniles” , etc. widely raised up government and public attention, which led to actions taken by local government to promote the revival of fishing grounds in the East China Sea.

Quanhua SHI

Quanhua SHI, Ph.D., graduated from Wildlife Resources College of Northeast Forestry University. Currently, she is the Director of Public Engagement Division, WWF China. She is a Senior Advisor of the Felid Research Center, State Forestry Administration (SFA), and a visiting professor of the International Culture Institute of Siberian Crane. Committed to the work of ecological environmental protection, Dr. SHI has more than 10 years of working experience in environmental NGO, in project management, planning, public relations management and brand management, and has gained fruitful achievements.

Yinlan TANG

Yinlan TANG was the office director of the Continuing Education Division in Shanghai Second Polytechnic University, the general office deputy director as well as the project department director of Shanghai Charity Education Training Center, and the Enterprise training certification teacher of NFTE (the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship). Tang Yinlan has devoted herself into charity and public welfare more than twenty years and accumulated abundant practical experience in project development and management.

Shuwen WANG

Shuwen WANG has Ph.D. in the field of rural energy development with more than 30 years of working experience. Dr. Wang served as biodiversity conservation manager in The Nature Conservancy (TNC) by cutting down the fuelwood consumption in the protected areas of Yunan and Guangxi. Also, Dr. Wang worked on Society of Entrepreneurs and Ecology in charge of the desertification control programs in Alashan for four years as the deputy director. Since June 2016, Wang have taken the role of General Secretary of Hongyi Nature Conservation Foundation in Shanghai. In May 2017, Wang moved to Guangdong Harmoney Foundation, serving its secretary-general.

Qingyin WANG

Mr.Wang, Senior Researcher and Former President of Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, China Academy of Fishery Sciences, has been undertaking studies on genetics and breeding of farmed marine organisms, reproductive and developmental biology, marine biological technology, etc.  He has presided many national research programs with significant breakthroughs in basic biological research on prawns and scallop.  With many cutting-edge research progress, Prof. Wang is acknowledged as an outstanding expert for Ministry of Agriculture along with many awards.

Jiansheng WU

Jiansheng WU has been working for Ching Po Daily of Shenzhen Press Group on in-depth investigation since 2006. He has reported some significant events, like Wenchuan Earthquake, the salvage of China's Song Dynasty shipwreck (Nanhai I), and the 10th Anniversary of Macau and Hong Kong Return. From 2012, Wu Jiansheng has promoted waste classification. He went to Taiwan and other placesfor in-depth interviews about successful waste classification experience.

Morgan XIA

Morgan XIA is the Secretary-General of Dive4Love. Besides being an experienced diver and a lifeguard scuba diver, Morgan is also a marathon runner, and a wine taster of WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust). He was engaged in coral convservation in 2010 and began full-time working at Dive4Love in 2015. He leads daily operation and project management for the oragnization, which covers activities from educational program for family with kids along coasts, and reef-check actions with volunteer divers.

Guoping YU

Serving the deputy head of enforcement division at the East China Sea Branch of Coastal Guard, Mr. Yu had worked for nearly twenty years at the Fishery Management Bureau of the East China Sea. With rich experience on fishery law enforcement and fisheries management, he has been part of the China-Japan Joint Committee on Fisheries. He led many awarded projects and published several books on fishery management. He received his B.S. in fishery resources at Shanghai Ocean University, and an MBA from a joint program by Shanghai Academy of Social Science and the America Southwest University.

Patrick YEUNG

Patrick YEUNG is the Project Manager of marine conservation projects at WWF-Hong Kong, mainly working on marine litter. He investigates the causes of the marine litter, finds solutions with all stakeholders, motivates the cooperation among government, NGOs and the society, as well as encourages cross-border cooperation to achieve overall improvement in the region. Patrick has received his M.Phil. in Environmental Science at Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2010, and is now pursuing his PhD in Biology to study coral and seaweed ecology.

Jiangang ZHU

Dr. Jiangang ZHU is a professor of anthropology at the College of Sociology and Anthropology at Sun Yat-sen University. He received his PhD in anthropology from Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Dr. Zhu is the vice president of the Guangdong Harmony Foundation and a visiting scholar at the Harvard-Yenching Institute. He has published numerous popular articles and monographs. Besides, Dr. Zhue is the chief editor of the Blue Book Of Civic Philanthropy and Magazine of Philanthropy.

Li ZHANG

Prof. Li ZHANG is a field wildlife biologist and the Professor of Ecology at Beijing Normal University. He was appointed as the Secretary General of the Society for Entrepreneurs and Ecology (SEE) Foundation of China since April 2016. Prof. Zhang has published over 70 research papers on China’s environmental policies and endangered species conservation in peer-reviewed journals including Nature, Science, Conservation Letters, Biological Conservation, Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity and Conservation etc. Prof. Zhang is also well-known for his research on China’s collective forest tenure reform policy. He was the China Country Director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (2002-2006), the interim country director and program director of Conservation International China Program (2008-2013).

Yongdong ZHOU

Prof. Zhou, Vice President of Marine Fisheries Research Institute of Zhejiang, has focused on the fishery resource investigation, ecological recovery of fisheries and research on fishery management for decades. He has engaged and completed nearly 30 research programs including National 973/275 programs and Zhejiang Key Programs. Moreover, he is a member of the expert panel for stock enhancement and juvenile releasing technologies of fishery resources at East China Sea District and Zhejiang Province, and member of Marine Organism Expert Committee (China) affiliated to China-Japan Fishery Committee. He has won several S&T progress prizes issued by the State Oceanic Administration, China Academy of Fishery Sciences, Zhejiang and Shanghai government, etc. He has published over 20 papers for domestic academic journals and received both B.S. and M.S. degrees from Shanghai Ocean University.

Wenbin ZHU

Mr. Zhu is the deputy head of Resources Branch in Marine Fisheries Research Institute of Zhejiang, and Dynamics Monitoring Station (Zhejiang) of Fishery Resources for East China Sea District, Ministry of Agriculture. He is now a senior engineer and a board member of Fishery Resources and Ocean Committee at Zhejiang Society of Fisheries. He has many years of research experience on coastal fishery, offshore fishery, fishery resources and ecology, etc. He implemented over 14 projects and composed ‘13th Five-year Plan of Zhejiang’s Pelagic Fishery Development’. He was granted 15 patents, published 15 academic papers as the first (corresponding) author, edited (chief or jointed) 3 monographs, developed a provincial standard and supervised 2 master students.
