Panels

Marine pollution mitigation by multiple stakeholders

We will focus on the theme of “marine pollution” to carry out an all-round observation, sharing and discussion. Starting from the recent marine pollution incident, we will explore the coping and governance of marine pollution problems. NGO partners of marine environmental protection will be encouraged to exchange opinions and share experiences. The successful stories of NGO’s contribution in solving marine pollution will be discussed. A roundtable of marine waste from the Pearl River will be organized.

Ecological restoration of coastal habitats

We will invite domestic and foreign marine scientists and field practitioners to share a variety of ecological restoration approaches for coastal habitats. This will cover the subjects of marine ecosystem services, how to inspire cooperation with enterprise through innovative model of ocean economy, and etc. In particular, it will cover a wide range of coastal habitats (coral reefs, oyster reefs and seagrass beds, etc.), and explore how to promote collaboration between China and the rest of the world in this field.

What can save the East China Sea? —— Sustainable Fisheries

In 2016, Zhejiang Province became the first province in China that passed legislation dedicated to juvenile fish protection. In particular, starting this May, Zhejiang has banned the sale of eight common seafood in order to prevent the catch of juveniles during summer moritarium. This significantly remarks a shift from ‘Ban on Catching’ to ‘Ban on Selling’. Why has Zhejiang always taken a leading position in fishery management? Will the determined government break the dilemma of the East China Sea depleted from fish? What kind of contribution came from research institutes and fishery industry respectively? What are the challenges facing them? And how NGO, private sector and public media can better facilitate the fishery management reform? Fishery scientists, managers, fishermen, NGOs and corporate will share their stories together at the panel of sustainable fishery.

Coral Reef Restoration

Coral reef is a significant part of the global ecosystem, which directly influences a quarter of marine organisms. In the recent five decades, coral reefs have faced various threats from human activities and global warming. Therefore, coral reef restoration has become a highly concerned topic in the world. This forum, we will invite research institutes and scientists to exchange their understanding and practical experiences in coral reef restoration. In particular, we will share the successful stories from China and abroad, and discuss how to enhance the public participation in coral reef restoration.

Collaboration between Chinese and international funders on ocean sustainability

We will organize a closed-door meeting for Chinese and international funders, which will facilitate a better understanding towards Chinese marine conservation issues and its political, social and cultural contexts. This hopefully will inspire partnerships between Chinese and international funders. Also, we will invite legal consultant and philanthropic advisors to share their views in the strategy and priorities of cultivating China’s local NGO power and its global impacts on ocean sustainability. Eventually, these discussion is expected to lead to Chinese and international funders’ a long-term cooperation initiatives.
